Marion blanked at homecoming

Staff writer

Marion’s homecoming game Friday against Hutchinson’s Trinity Catholic got off to a bad start as the Celtics returned the opening kickoff for an 87-yard touchdown. It didn’t let up from there, with Hutch Trinity going on to win 41-0.

The Warriors’ responded well with three runs for 27 yards on their first drive but were forced to punt after gaining one first down.

A lost fumble on the Warriors’ second possession led to a quick score from the visitors.

The most noticeable difference Friday was the absence of quarterback Seth Lanning, who was out with an injury.

His younger brother, freshman Jack Lanning, made some promising plays when he filled in. Most notably during the first quarter was a 19-yard pass, which Lanning completed on third-and-nine to Will Alleven, despite rolling to his off-hand side.

Marion was able to stop the Celtic offense at times but by halftime the Warriors were down 28-0.

Braedon Mercer laid out a Hutch Trinity player to force a punt-return fumble in the third quarter, which may have been Marion’s play of the night. The Warriors drove down to the three yard line thanks to a long pass to Ian Ingles, but lost possession on an interception in the end zone.

Trojan defense smothers Haven

Hillsboro added its second straight victory with a 26-6 win at Haven, finding a balance between offense and defense.

Despite being limited to six points the first half, the Trojan offense responded coming out of the locker room with 13 points in the third quarter. Matthew Potucek opened the quarter with a 17-yard pass to Frank Wichert and added a rushing touchdown from five yards out late in the quarter.

The addition of Potucek’s second quarter pass to Cole Kaufman gave him three total touchdowns for the game.

The defense nearly escaped with a clean sheet, allowing six points with less than four minutes in the third quarter, but shutting down the Wildcats the rest of the night.

Hein added a touchdown run from 35 yards out in the fourth quarter, and the Trojans put through the extra point to cement the game’s final score.

Goessel player scores 6 touchdowns

Goessel’s game Friday against Moundridge was a shootout that ended with the Bluebirds taking a 62-48 win.

The Bluebirds led 16-12 at the end of one quarter and only expanded their lead from there.

The offensive line opened holes just big enough for Jake Wiens, who slipped through for six touchdowns and led the team with 205 yards rushing.

The Bluebirds offense was humming, as Grant Bryant and Kacen Smith also scored, and Bryant added 105 yards rushing.

Centre loses by mercy rule

The Cougars experienced another disheartening loss Friday, losing 58-8 at Marais Des Cygnes.

Centre scored its only points in the first quarter on a 45-yard run by quarterback Lane Methvin. After Keegan August caught a pass from Methvin for the conversion, Centre trailed 16-8.

Marais Des Cygnes then scored 20 points in the second quarter and 14 points in the third. The final touchdown came at 7:59 in the third quarter, ending the game by mercy rule.

Methvin had 15 carries for 70 yards and three catches for 33 yards, while Quinten Bina had 12 carries for 24 yards and one reception for 20 yards.

Peabody-Burns’ winning streak over

Peabody-Burns’ winning streak ended Friday with a 30-14 home-loss to South Barber.

The Warriors were outscored 16-0 in the second quarter, and that proved to be the difference. Both teams were scoreless the first quarter, and The Warriors matched South Barber’s second-half tally of 14 points with two touchdowns of their own.

They held a 64-44 advantage in total plays, and a first down advantage of 13-8, but their 17 penalties for 155 yards created an insurmountable task.

Peabody-Burns’ defense recovered two fumbles but also allowed 269 rushing yards.
