Florence’s Labor Day celebration will be a three-day event Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and 2. This year’s theme will be “99.96% Pure Fun.”

Citywide garage sales will start at 8 a.m. Aug. 31. Florence Chamber of Commerce will serve biscuits and gravy at Veterans Park on Main St.

A co-ed baseball tournament also will start at 8 a.m. at the baseball field at 9th and Barker Sts.

“Picnic on the Lawn” and a fish fry will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Masonic Lodge members will start serving food and drinks at 6 p.m. on Main St.

Free face painting, caricature drawings, henna tattoos, and a photo booth will be in Veterans Park 6 to 9 p.m. The Matt Engels Band will play at 6 p.m. Saturday. A street dance, featuring the Callahan Band, will follow at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, Sept.1. Events will include a community church service at 11 a.m. and a potluck lunch at noon in Grandview Park. A bike decorating contest will start at 2 p.m. at 6th and Main Sts.

A vintage baseball game will begin at 6 p.m. at the baseball field. Uniforms and rules will be from the 1860s period. The game will be preceded by an ice cream social at 5:30 p.m. A watermelon-seed spitting contest will follow the game. A fireworks display will start at dusk.

“Labor Day Run at the Nation’s Crossroads” at 8 a.m. will kick off Sept. 2 events Traditional events are the Bryan Harper horseshoe pitching contest, flag raising by the American Legion, parade, kids’ games and turtle races, and barnyard olympics.

Flint Hills Muzzleloaders Club will sponsor its annual Labor Day shoot on Aug. 31. More information is available from Lynette Schmidt at (620) 382-5841.

Buttons are required for most events and can be purchased at Cottonwood Valley Bank and the city clerk’s office in Florence and at Carlsons’ Grocery and Tampa State Bank in Marion.
