Levi Morris

Democrat Levi Morris is challenging Republican incumbent Rick Wilborn for the 35th District Senate seat.

Morris, 34, is a Lyons attorney who formerly practiced law in Harvey County and was a Barton County prosecutor.

While Morris is running against Wilborn, he’s quick to link his opponent to Gov. Sam Brownback.

“I try to take every opportunity to say that first and foremost, I want to help Kansas move beyond the failed policies of Sam Brownback,” he said.

A top priority for Morris in Topeka would be addressing the state budget.

“We have to balance the budget,” he said. “Our budget was unbalanced the second they passed it. They gaveled the sessin closed and scurried home.”

Morris also wants to revisit Brownback’s tax cuts and address tax increases.

“I know how hard it is for politicians to say those words, but we have 330,000 people paying no taxes,” he said.

Morris criticized Wilborn for routinely voting for Brownback initiatives, and reversing his positions on issues when it was expedient.

Morris is also concerned about reported job losses, and said the problem is more complex to deal with than simply cutting taxes.

If elected, he expects to find and work for a Senate more conducive to compromise.

“Nothing is off the table,” he said.
