Lady Cougars ‘on a learning curve,’ coach says

Staff writer

Centre volleyball team failed to advance out of pool play Saturday at their home tournament. They easily defeated Life Prep Academy of Wichita but lost in three games to Rural Vista and two games to Marion.

First-year coach Susan Saunders said the team is on a “learning curve.”

“It’s a new coach, new system, new team, new positions, and new dynamics,” she said. “Our biggest goal is to have a positive outlook and make each other better.”

Perhaps their best game of the tournament was the first game against Rural Vista. With the help of good spiking by Shelby Pankratz and good serving by Kate Basore, they defeated the Heat handily, 25-10.

However, they went on to lose the next two games, 15-25 and 22-25.

“Everything went our way in the first game,” Saunders said. “What followed was the biggest swing I have ever seen. The main thing is that the girls didn’t give up.”

They will play Saturday in the Marion Spikefest.

Centre finished 1-1 at Little River Sept. 6. Centre lost to Rural Vista 18-25 and 18-25 and defeated Little River 11-25, 29-27, and 25-17.
