Hillsboro Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market closing Jan. 28

Hillsboro’s Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market will close Jan. 28. It is one of 154 U.S. stores being shuttered by the retail giant.

Hillsboro mayor Delores Dallke said she received a call from company officials Friday morning.

“It is true; they will close Jan. 28,” she said. “They called me before 7 a.m. from corporate. The manager from our store here in Hillsboro also contacted me.”

Wal-Mart CEO Doug McMillon said in a press release that closures are “essential to maintaining a healthy business.”

“Closing stores is never an easy decision, but it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future,” he said.

Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets in Burlington, Clearwater, Columbus, Ellsworth, and Rose Hill, and three in Wichita also will close by the end of the month.

Employees in Hillsboro reportedly were notified Thursday night.
