Goessel

Goessel’s volleyball team competed in non-league games Thursday against Douglass and Lyons and kept its undefeated start intact at 14-0.

The Bluebirds’ power came from Delaney Duerksen and Bella O’Neill from the left side, and Isabelle Alderfer from the right side.

Goessel beat Douglass 25-15, 25-15.

Jenna Flaming dished out consistent assists and Mackenzie Voth scooped up hits to the back row to claim the first set against Lyons, 25-13.

Taking advantage of Lion mistakes, the Bluebirds gained a double-digit lead while Jayley Schmidt served aces, as Goessel finished the second set and game with a 25-6 win.

Goessel (14-0) will be at the Olpe Tournament on Saturday.

Hillsboro

Hillsboro’s volleyball team played host Thursday to Sedgwick and swept the Cardinals 3-0 in a best-of-five match.

After hiccups during the first few weeks this season, coach Sandy Arnold said players have begun adjusting to playing in new positions.

Amyah Werth had 17 kills, Mylee Funk finished with nine, and Lundyn Hiebert had eight.

Werth also had two aces, along with Daisy Klein, who had three.

Arnold said Klein has done well distributing the ball and has found success on defense and serving.

Werth added more to her box score total with 22 digs, while Rylee Voran had 16 digs.

“I am very excited about the hustle and heart of every player on the team,” Arnold said.

The Trojans will travel Saturday to Douglass for their next tournament this season.

Marion

Playing host during their 20th annual Spike Fest at Marion Sports and Aquatic Center on Saturday, the Warriors’ volleyball team placed fourth after winning two of the five games.

Despite the results, coach Kayley Davis said, the team continues to build one week at a time and that Spike Fest was no different.

“The girls have a strong bond, so we want to use that to help push them to the next level as a group as we head deeper into league play,” Davis said.

Junior Kiersten Wildin made 60 assists during the tournament.

Junior Brylee Smith had 37 digs and served five aces, while senior Kate Wessel led Marion in kills with 35.

“Wessel had some fantastic swings and blocks and was voted by opposing coaches to the all-tournament team, which was very deserved,” Davis said.

Wessel may have shone in the spotlight, but Davis said sophomore Navaeh Jones is starting to show who she could become on attack.

“Nevaeh Jones is starting to become more confident as an attacker, and we saw some glimpses of that this weekend,” Davis said. “We’re excited to watch her push herself even more.”

Marion will hit the road Thursday to play against Berean before traveling Tuesday to face off against Wichita Classical.

Peabody-Burns

Peabody-Burns traveled Monday to Smoky Valley and took the match to the wire before losing, 2-1.

Afterward, the Warriors played St. Xavier and won via sweep, 2-0.

“We had some readjusting this week amongst the lineup for Smoky Valley,” coach Clarissa Dutton said. “Then the normal non-starters got a lot of playing time in against St. Xavier.”

Peabody-Burns will hit the road again when it travels Saturday to Wakefield for another tournament.

Centre

The Cougars will be at the Herington Invitational on Saturday for their next games of the season.
