Gifts surprise Give-Back recipient

Staff writer

Lois Sklenar was shocked by the size of the turkey that showed up on her porch Tuesday afternoon.

The 22-pound bird one of many prizes Sklenar marveled over as the winner of this year’s Give-Back Giveaway, which was sponsored by the Marion County Record.

“I don’t know what I am going to do with that big turkey they brought me,” she said. “Gosh, they have weather radios and a little bit of everything, everything you can think of.”

Sklenar said close friend Shirley Hamm told her she nominated her for the contest and she appreciated it — even if she thought she wouldn’t win.

“I thought ‘they won’t call me, it’s a Marion deal,’ ” she said. “When I got the call, I was shocked they chose me. It was wonderful.”

Hamm was just as thrilled as her friend.

“Oh, honey, thank you,” she said when she heard the news. “This is really going to help her. I really appreciate it. I think the Holy Spirit worked on me.”

Hamm, 85, said Sklenar, 87, uses a walker and can’t see very well because she has macular degeneration.

Hamm takes Sklenar to her doctor’s appointments, but wanted to give her friend a little more help this season.

Sklenar said she appreciated the $25 gift cards from grocers Dale’s Supermarket and Carlsons’ Grocery, but will be able to use everything area merchants donated.

Other gifts included $50 of Hillsboro Chamber Bucks, a weather alert radio from Nex-Tech Wireless, candles, and hot cocoa.

“How can I just thank everybody who did this for me?” she said. “I don’t know how I could be so lucky.”

For now the turkey is resting in her freezer as a possible dinner for Sklenar and her son.
