Getting a cleat up on memories at alumni football game

Staff writer

Old stomping grounds were visited Friday night by Hillsboro and Marion high school graduates playing an alumni football game at Joel Wiens Stadium.

Marion players who graduated between 1988 and 2005 would recognize the oldest player on the Hillsboro team as former assistant coach at Marion High School.

Doug Dick, a 1978 Hillsboro High School graduate, taught and coached Marion’s team from 1988 to 2004 before going to Hillsboro to teach fourth and fifth grade social studies and language arts and coach middle school football.

“Most of those kids were a lot younger than me,” he said. “Being able to compete against them was fun.”

He also got to play with two of his sons, Daniel and David.

“It was great getting on the field with them,” he said. “It was definitely worthwhile.”

Dick described the feeling on the field as fun competitiveness.

“We all wanted to win, but when there’s no title on the line, it’s just go out there and have fun and do your best.

“I just appreciated the good sportsmanship, on both sides,” Dick said. “It made it more fun.”
