Former commissioner files for office

Former county commissioner Dan Holub this past Friday filed for District 4 county commission seat as a write-in candidate.

Holub, a conservative who served on the commission from 2004 to 2016, said he decided to run because he has seen many things happen that he disagrees with.

One was the handling of the idea of hiring a county administrator.

“I was upset about elections for the county administrator,” Holub said. “They were advertising about $80,000 a year with no expectations for what he was going to do.”

That wasn’t his only disagreement with actions taken by present commissioners Randy Dallke, Dianne Novak, and Kent Becker.

“When Dianne and Kent voted to go ahead with the county administrator in spite of the election results, and they did it without Randy present, and it wasn’t on the agenda — that was way wrong,” he said.

He also disagrees with hiring a county engineer before writing a job description.

“It’s just mayhem,” Holub said. “We need to do better, and I don’t see any hope with what we’ve got going now.”

Holub said the situation is not doing the county any good.

“We haven’t got the time or the money to be screwing around like this,” he said.

He’d like to see the county stop hiring outside experts at a high cost. He questions whether those experts give the right advice. Commissioners need to do their homework, and he doesn’t see that happening, he said.

“I think we could do better,” Holub said. “There are questions that need to be asked but are not being asked.”

County clerk Tina Spencer said Holub is the only write-in candidate who has filed for either new commission district seat. Others could be running but have not yet made their candidacy known.
