Fast named museum coordinator

Staff writer

Hillsboro resident Steve Fast was recently named museum coordinator by Larry Paine and an interview committee that included museum board members.

Fast heard about the position from a museum board member.

“David Brown was the one on the board who asked if I’d be interested,” Fast said, “and I said I’d look at it.”

After going through an interview process, Fast was chosen for the position, which Paine said seemed to be a good fit for him.

“He had quite a bit of enthusiasm about the museums,” Paine said, “and was always involved in getting friends of his that would come to visit over to the museum for a tour.”

Fast moved to Hillsboro a year ago from Houston, and provides financial services, valuations, and training courses to the oil and gas industry through his company “Fast Decision Solutions.”

He is excited about the opportunity, and thinks the job will be interesting.

“Hillsboro has a lot of neat things with the Adobe House, Friesen windmill, and Scheffler House,” Fast said. “Now that I’ll be there permanently, we’ll have hours that we’ll be open and we’ll have time for people to come by and see the neat things we have.”

Along with a new director comes new hours for the museum visitor center, which will be 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. They will also be open 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Renovations also are being done on the Adobe house museum after they received a $69,000 Heritage Trust Fund grant for masonry work.

Fast said one thing he would like to have done in the future is get the windmill grinding wheat again. He is eager about others experiencing the uniqueness of the museums.

“Whenever I’ve had guests, I’ve taken them to the museums because I think there’s fun things to look at,” Fast said. “I want to make that more accessible to more people.”
