Fair gearing up
for later this month

The smell of cotton candy; the sound of children laughing; animals, dust and fun — all evokes memories of a county fair.

“Homegrown Heroes” will be the theme for the 88th Marion County fair, scheduled for July 21 to 29 in Hillsboro.

Along with 4-H and FFA projects, the fair offers activities for people of all ages.

Children can participate in a petting zoo, mutton bustin’ and calf scramble, bouncy house, and pedal tractor pull events.

Adults may want to try their luck at a truck and antique tractor pull, horseshoe/corn hole contest, glow run or dodge ball tournament.

Activities for the family include a free watermelon feed, parade, rodeo, water slide, and demolition derby.

Fair manager Bridgette Hamm said the fair board had been busy lining up sponsors to cover the events.

“It takes a lot of time and effort to make fair a successful event. Our goal is to get it back to the level it used to be,” she said.
