Evelyn Hensley’s four children will be hosts for a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 19 at Tampa Senior Center celebrating her 100th birthday.

Born Jan. 22, 1919, in Durham Park Township to Reinhardt and Julia (Nuss) Schmidt, she was the youngest of eight children.

The family moved in 1927 to a farm just south of Tampa. Her mother died unexpectedly two years later.

A 1937 graduate of Tampa Rural High School, she worked in area restaurants and as a cook and housekeeper for a Wichita family before marrying James Hensley on June 24, 1944.

The couple lived in Tampa and in later years she worked at Havlik Grocery, at George’s Market, as a substitute clerk at the Tampa post office, and for more than 10 years as Durham postmaster.

In retirement, the couple wintered in Weslaco, Texas. Her husband died in 1986, and she moved to Winfield in 2003 to be near relatives, but her children say her heart has remained in Tampa.
