Energy assistance is now available

Help with the cost of winter heating is available to qualifying applicants through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, which will accept applications this week through March 31.

To qualify for the program, household income must fall below 130 percent of the federal poverty level, and applicants must be responsible for paying the utility bill, either directly to a utility company or to the landlord.

Monthly income limits are $1,276 for a family of one; $1,726 for a family of two; $2,177 for a family of three; and $2,628 for a family of four. For each additional family member, add $451.

The amount of LIEAP benefits awarded depends on the number of people living in the home, the type of heating fuel and residence, and utility rates.

The program is available through the Department of Children and Families. Applications can be made online at lieap.dcf.ks.gov or by mail.

More information on the program is available at (620) 272-5985.
