Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
8:49 a.m. — A 33-year-old man who may have suffered a stroke in the 500 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A technician aboard Peabody ambulance was dispatched as a first responder.
3:02 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters stood by for less than an hour during a controlled burn at the Hillsboro water plant.
3:22 p.m. — Goessel firefighters determined that a report of an explosion and yard on fire near the Goessel city building was caused by a resident throwing fireworks into a burn barrel.
11:34 p.m. — A patient at St. Luke Hospital, Marion, was transferred by Marion ambulance to the surgical intensive care unit at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 2:06 a.m.
1:10 p.m. — Marion ambulance responded to the accidental triggering of a medical alarm at Homestead Senior Residences, Marion.
2:08 p.m. — Lost Springs firefighters were alerted to what almost immediately was determined to be a false alarm at Centre High School.
4:37 a.m. — A 20-year-old man not breathing normally in the 300 block of Birch St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
9:35 a.m. — A 6-month-old boy who rolled off a bed and hit his head on a heater in the 400 block of N. Sycamore St. in Peabody was taken to a hospital by private vehicle instead of an ambulance. A technician aboard Peabody ambulance arrived eight minutes after the initial call. Hillsboro ambulance arrived 13 minutes after that.
11:50 a.m. — An 81-year-old woman with lower back pain in the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro was treated with fentanyl and taken to HCH by the county’s backup ambulance, based in Hillsboro. Medics requested assistance from the county’s ambulance director.
8:03 p.m. — A 91-year-old man who fell four hours earlier and may have injured his neck at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
11:49 p.m. — With a fracture confirmed, the same patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:14 a.m.
3:55 a.m. — A 72-year-old man with kidney failure was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to St. Francis. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:44 a.m.
2:23 p.m. — A man walking in a field southwest of HCH who apparently told dispatchers he might be suffering from a drug overdose reached the hospital on his own before Hillsboro police, Hillsboro ambulance, and the county ambulance director arrived.
2:39 p.m. — A grass fire at US-56/77 and 170th Rd., initially mis-dispatched to Lincolnville firefighters as being at 300th Rd., was battled initially by Marion firefighters and later by Florence and Lincolnville firefighters as well for more than two hours. Marion’s fire tanker was delayed in responding because it had a dead battery.
4:23 p.m. — An 84-year-old woman who activated a medical alarm at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
7:18 p.m. — A 98-year-old woman with an infected blister on her leg was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Parkside Homes to HCH.
7:25 p.m. — An 84-year-old woman with an abnormal narrowing of her esophagus was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to McPherson Center for Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:42 p.m.
8:13 a.m. — A 55-year-old woman who fell in the 400 block of N. Adams St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
12:40 p.m. — An 81-year-old woman who fell in the 700 block of N. Peabody St. in Peabody was helped up by a first responder in Peabody ambulance. She declined to be taken to a hospital. A call for Hillsboro ambulance was canceled.
7:18 p.m. — An 82-year-old man who reportedly was uninjured in a fall at a farm near 170th and Eagle Rds. nevertheless was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH as a precaution recommended by his physician.
12:41 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance again was sent to care for an 81-year-old woman suffering lower back pain in the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro. Transmissions do not indicate whether she was taken to a hospital.
1:15 p.m. — A 69-year-old man having a seizure and gasping for air at a home on Lakeshore Dr. near Back Bay Ct. at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance initially responded as well but was called off.
3:37 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman who fell and hurt her head at Bethesda Home in Goessel was transferred to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance after some brief confusion over gaining entry to the nursing home. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 5:14 p.m.
3:22 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was called to the 400 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro for a 3-year-old boy vomiting blood after a recent tonsillectomy. A physician’s office called dispatchers to recommend that the boy be taken to wherever his tonsils had been removed, but the ambulance reported that the boy’s mother declined to have the ambulance transport him.
4:27 a.m. — The mother called back and had Hillsboro ambulance take her son to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:48 a.m.
4:31 a.m. — An 82-year-old woman experiencing pain at a residence in the 700 block of Grand Ave. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance.
1:54 p.m. — A 61-year-old woman experiencing cardiac problems at a residence in the 300 block of N. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. The county’s ambulance director also responded to the call.
6:52 p.m. — A 72-year-old woman who fell off a motorized scooter in front of Indian Guide Terrace Apartments in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance. Peabody firefighters helped lift her.
