Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

SEPT. 20

12:28 a.m. — A 59-year-old woman who fell at a residence in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. and was unable to get up was helped by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:29 p.m. — A Peabody fire engine tended a rekindled controlled burn from the day before at 80th and Limestone Rds.

1:44 p.m. — A pasture fire west of 60th and Remington Rds. was extinguished within an hour by Peabody firefighters.

3:50 p.m. — A 93-year-old woman whose son found her six hours after she fell at a home in the 100 block of Washington St. in Marion was taken to NMC Health, Newton, by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to its quarters at 6:14 p.m.

7:07 p.m. — The county’s backup ambulance, based in Hillsboro, stood by and then checked people involved in a fight at a farmhouse on 170th Rd. between Eagle and Falcon Rds. No one was taken to a hospital. Dispatchers initially assigned the call to Marion ambulance but were confused about the location and about whether a full crew was available in Hillsboro.

SEPT. 21

7:07 a.m. — A 73-year-old woman with digestive tract bleeding was taken by Marion ambulance to NMC from the 1400 block of Denver St. in Marion. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:13 a.m.

10:04 a.m. — A 50-year-old woman suffering a seizure for nearly an hour at Goessel High School was taken to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance. Two first responders from Goessel tended the patient until the ambulance arrived. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 12:20 p.m.

12:32 p.m. — A 76-year-old woman with an altered level of consciousness was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Hillsboro Community Hospital from the 400 block of Briarwood Lane in Hillsboro

5:01 p.m. — A smoldering wood pile next to a bridge north of 260th and Jade Rd. was extinguished in less than 20 minutes by Durham firefighters.

9:37 p.m. — A vehicle fire at US-56 and Pawnee Rd. was extinguished in less than an hour by Marion firefighters.

10:05 p.m. — Hillsboro, Durham, and Goessel firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance were dispatched to a possible structure fire that turned out to be nothing more than heat from an apparently improperly vented exhaust at a home in the 500 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro.

10:43 p.m. — A 67-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease having trouble speaking between breaths at a residence in the 200 block of N. Plum St. in Peabody was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Peabody ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded. Dispatchers initially announced the location as E. Plum St. but were informed by a Peabody attendant that Plum runs north and south.

THURSDAY

3:30 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 8:32 p.m. during a football game at Marion Stadium.

5:27 p.m. — Peabody ambulance stood by until 7:52 p.m. during a football game at Peabody City Park.

5:30 p.m. — Tampa ambulance stood by until 8:06 p.m. during a football game at Centre schools.

9:10 p.m. — A smoke alarm that sent Hillsboro firefighters to Tabor College townhouses provided have been activated by burned pancakes.

9:25 p.m. — A Marion fire truck stood by until 10:19 p.m. during a homecoming bonfire at Marion Stadium.

FRIDAY

10:58 a.m. — An uninjured 90-year-old woman who fell at a residence in the 300 block of W. 11th St. in Florence was helped by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.

6:45 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 9:23 p.m. during a football game at Marion Stadium.

9:04 p.m. — Another fire alarm at Tabor townhouses proved to be a false alarm for Hillsboro firefighters.

SATURDAY

12:17 p.m. — Marion police and Hillsboro and Marion ambulances responded to a call in which a patient was not breathing at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion. Marion police gave the patient CPR. The patient was transferred to St. Luke Hospital.

2:34 p.m. — A patient was transferred by helicopter from St. Luke to a hospital in Wichita.

SUNDAY

12:23 a.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm at a residence in the 200 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been activated by low batteries.

2:01 a.m. — A 78-year-old man who fell at a residence in the 100 block of W. 6th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Florence first responders were paged but did not answer.

2:25 p.m. — A 47-year-old man who cut himself with a chain saw in a field south of 90th Rd. and west of Pawnee Rd. was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Peabody ambulance. The ambulance was diverted there from NMC. An emergency medical technician from Hillsboro ambulance accompanied a lone EMT from Peabody ambulance on the trip. The Hillsboro EMT rejoined Hillsboro ambulance, returning it to full strength, at 5:06 p.m. Peabody ambulance was back in Peabody as a first-response unit at 5:27 p.m.

3:13 p.m. — A fire alarm in the kitchen at St. Luke was determined by Marion firefighters to have been a false alarm.

9:38 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to NMC on a non-emergency basis by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to its quarters at 11:21 a.m.

MONDAY

6:46 a.m. — A grass fire at Kanza and 250th Rds. was brought under control within 20 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

5:56 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by until 8:09 p.m. during a football game at Joel Wiens Stadium.

7:17 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley for evaluation. A series of additional calls kept the ambulance away from its station until 11:42 p.m.

9:32 p.m. — As Marion ambulance re-entered the county en route back from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to HCH to transfer a neurological patient to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 12:05 a.m.

9:55 p.m. — Marion ambulance, still not back in is station, was dispatched along with Hillsboro first responders after a medical alarm company reported that a woman had fallen at a residence in the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

10:35 p.m. — Still not back in its station, Marion ambulance was sent back to the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro after the same patient fell a second time. Hillsboro first responders also were paged again. This time, the patient agreed to be taken to HCH.
