SEPT. 14

12:45 a.m. — A 44-year-old man with a two-inch wound on the back of his head was taken by Peabody ambulance to NMC Health from the 100 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody. A lone EMT from Peabody was joined by one from Hillsboro ambulance, which also responded, in transporting the patient. The Hillsboro EMT returned to Hillsboro ambulance at 2:17 a.m., and Peabody ambulance returned to its station at 2:39 a.m.

12:23 p.m. — A 67-year-old woman who recently had knee surgery and whom an alarm company reported needed help getting up at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was assisted by a lone attendant staffing Peabody ambulance. The attendant told dispatchers he would check on the woman and see whether additional responders were needed. However, the county’s ambulance director instructed dispatchers to page Hillsboro ambulance as well. Meanwhile, a Peabody firefighter, hearing the call, responded on his own. He and the ambulance attendant helped the woman. She did not want to be taken to a hospital, so the call to Hillsboro ambulance was canceled.

3:50 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched after a 60-year-old man was reported to be sitting outside Peabody Market and bleeding from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Without being dispatched, a Peabody ambulance attendant asked to respond as a first-response unit. A Peabody police officer also reported that he would respond. The officer radioed that the injuries were from a bicycle rather than motorcycle accident, and the Peabody ambulance attendant reported that the patient did not wish to be taken to a hospital. The call to Hillsboro ambulance was canceled before the ambulance arrived.

5:10 p.m. — A 34-year-old woman having trouble breathing and experiencing numbness in her arm declined to be taken to a hospital from a residence on Needle Rd. south of 59th Rd. Peabody and Hillsboro ambulances both were dispatched. A Peabody police officer also responded.

First responders from Goessel were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:48 p.m.

7 p.m. — After dispatchers first verified that it had a full crew while Hillsboro ambulance was in Goessel, Marion ambulance was dispatched along with Peabody ambulance to the same address as an earlier call at Indian Guide Terrace. Another call from an alarm company indicated that what appeared to be the same uninjured woman had fallen from a couch and needed help getting up. A lone Peabody attendant informed dispatchers that a firefighter was accompanying him. Marion ambulance attempted to reach the attendant by radio but could not. A Marion attendant asked for the apartment number to be repeated, but a dispatcher instead provided what the attendant said was the radio call sign of the Peabody attendant who had responded. At that point, Marion ambulance informed dispatchers that the patient had declined to be taken to a hospital, and the ambulance returned to Marion, arriving at 8:22 p.m.

9:37 p.m. — Pending arrival of Marion and Hillsboro ambulances, both of which were dispatched, a caller was told how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation to an 88-year-old man experiencing chest pains and feeling clammy at a farmhouse near 190th and Xavier Rds. Within three minutes, Marion firefighters also were paged to assist with CPR. With a firefighter on board the ambulance to assist, the patient was taken to St. Luke, arriving at 10:34 p.m.
