Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

march 27

4:36 p.m. — A patient at St. Luke Hospital, Marion, was transferred to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance.

7:19 p.m. — Three fire departments — Hillsboro, Marion, and Durham — were initially dispatched to extinguish an oven fire at a residence in the 400 block of S. Ash St. in Hillsboro. Hillsboro ambulance also was summoned, but it along with Durham and Marion firefighters were quickly told to disregard the call. The oven was removed and the home ventilated by Hillsboro firefighters.

8:38 p.m. — A woman who injured her wrist in a one-car accident on US-77 south of 105th Rd. was taken to Susan B. Allen Hospital, El Dorado, by Florence ambulance after ambiguity over the location of the accident was resolved. Florence firefighters, a sheriff’s deputy, and a Peabody police officer assisted.

MARCH 28

9:28 a.m. — Both people reported to have been injured in a two-vehicle accident half a mile west of Peabody on US-50 declined to be taken to a hospital. Marion and Peabody ambulances responded, and a LifeTeam helicopter originally was summoned but then told to disregard. Multiple pages to Peabody firefighters were needed, however, for traffic control. Firefighters remained on the scene for more than an hour.

9:58 a.m. — A Hillsboro Community Hospital resident receiving intravenous drugs was transferred to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance. The county emergency medical director answered the call.

10:02 a.m. — A fire alarm reported to be sounding at Hilltop Manor turned out to be a test.

10:43 a.m. — A 71-year-old woman having trouble getting from the floor into her walker at a residence in the 200 block of S. Kennedy St. in Hillsboro was helped up by Hillsboro’s fire chief and checked but not taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

12:35 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman who fell and injured her hip at Hillsboro Senior Center was taken to Newton Medical Center by Marion ambulance, which was filling in because Hillsboro ambulance had not yet returned from Wichita. Hillsboro’s fire chief assisted.

4:41 p.m. — A grass fire near US-50 and Jade Rd. was extinguished by Peabody and Walton firefighters.

6:22 p.m. — A 57-year-old Salem Home patient was taken to HCH per physician’s orders. The call was handled by Marion ambulance, which along with Tampa ambulance was in Hillsboro for training at the time.

7:11 p.m. — An 18-year-old bleeding from the head after wrecking his bicycle in the 700 block of W. 3rd St. in Peabody was checked by Peabody ambulance but was taken to St. Luke by private vehicle.

THURSDAY

9:49 a.m. — A Hillsboro fire truck was on standby for two controlled burns at the city golf course.

2:34 p.m. — A passenger having trouble breathing in a vehicle near Sycamore and 2nd Sts. was taken to Newton Med by Peabody ambulance.

FRIDAY

4:49 a.m. — An HCH patient receiving intravenous pain medication was transferred to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:54 p.m. — Burns firefighters helped battle a grass fire near Myers Rd. and I-335 in Butler County.

6:30 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

SATURDAY

1:09 a.m. — A 62-year-old man having trouble breathing was taken by Peabody ambulance from the 100 block of W. Division St. to Newton Med.

1:13 a.m. — An elderly woman who fell and was having trouble getting up was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from the 200 block of S. Cedar St. Arrival of the ambulance was delayed as much as 11 minutes because the address originally was listed as being on W. Cedar St., which does not exist. Ambulance attendants persisted in challenging the address, which dispatchers insisted was what the caller had given. Eventually, the home was located by a caller telling dispatchers that a garage light had been turned on.

7:00 p.m. — A 20-year-old male suffering from a seizure or a drug overdose near K-15 and 90th Rd. was taken to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance. A first responder from Goessel assisted.

8:19 p.m. — A elderly woman on blood thinners who cut her ankle at a Marion County Lake residence on Upland Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

SUNDAY

3:41 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman who slipped out of her chair at Hilltop Manor was assisted by Marion ambulance but declined to be taken to a hospital.

7:01 p.m. — An HCH patient was transported to Kansas Heart by Hillsboro ambulance.

MONDAY

4:33 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:42 p.m. — A 27-year-old man experiencing chest pains while driving on US-77 north of 340th Rd. was taken to Herington Hospital by Tampa ambulance. A first responder from Lincolnville also was on the scene.
