Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 26

2:25 p.m. — A 69-year-old woman with difficulty breathing was taken from the 100 block of S. Birch St. to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:52 p.m. — A woman in her 60s fell in a community room at Indian Guide apartments. Peabody ambulance was dispatched. Further information about the call was garbled.

5:03 p.m. — A woman drove into a utility pole near Florence’s water tower. Florence ambulance and firefighters responded, but no injuries were reported. Marion ambulance and an air ambulance were initially dispatched but told to stand down.

DEC. 27

11:21 a.m. — A patient at St. Luke Hospital was transferred to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, by Marion ambulance.

11:33 p.m. — A woman with abdominal pain was taken by Tampa ambulance to St. Luke from a residence on Sunflower Rd. between 330th and 340th Rds.

THURSDAY

8:49 a.m. — A 13-year-old student who passed out during sports practice at Marion Middle School gymnasium declined to be transported to a hospital by Marion ambulance. The county’s emergency medical service director arrived before the ambulance.

10:01 a.m. — A 71-year-old woman suffering a relapse of pneumonia in the 300 block of Lincoln St. in Tampa was taken to HCH by Tampa ambulance.

10:23 a.m. — A St. Luke patient suffering from altered mental status was transferred to Wesley by Marion ambulance.

7:03 p.m. — A women who fell at Hilltop Manor and activated her medical alarm was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:06 p.m. — A 19-year-old woman hit by a vehicle and seriously injured after a fight in the 200 block of W. 10th St. in Florence was taken by Florence ambulance to St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. A member of the crew from Marion ambulance, which also responded, accompanied the patient. Florence firefighters set up a landing zone for a helicopter ambulance, but the helicopter could not fly because of icing.

FRIDAY

6:06 a.m. — A Marion Assisted Living resident with an irregular heartbeat was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:55 a.m. — A St. Luke patient requiring paramedic care was transferred to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance.

1:49 p.m. — A false alarm from a medical alerting service briefly had Tampa ambulance heading to a residence on Vista Rd. between 330th and 340th Rds.

4:41 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Newton Medical Center by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:23 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance still en route to Newton, a 95-year-old woman with a high fever was taken from Parkside Homes to HCH by Marion ambulance.

7:54 p.m. — A man who had been drinking and was lying on a floor at a residence in the 400 block of Plum St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance.

8:51 p.m. — An older woman with difficulty breathing in the 100 block of S. Birch St. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:03 p.m. — A 90-year-old woman with a headache and a history of stroke was taken from a residence near 275th and Remington Rds. in Pilsen to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. A first responder from Lincolnville, requested by the ambulance crew, also was dispatched but arrived after the ambulance and immediately returned to Lincolnville.

9:50 p.m. — Responding from HCH immediately upon the conclusion of its previous call, Hillsboro ambulance took an 89-year-old woman with trouble breathing to HCH from Parkside Homes.

SATURDAY

5:48 a.m. — Tampa ambulance, 32 miles away, was initially dispatched to Bethesda Home in Goessel. Two minutes later, the call was reassigned to Hillsboro ambulance, just 15 miles away. Goessel first responders also were paged but did not appear to answer. An 89-year-old resident ended up being transferred to Newton Medical Center by the ambulance, which arrived in Goessel 24 minutes after the initial call.

12:02 p.m. — A Parkside Homes resident was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:38 p.m. — Another ambulance crew was sent to the same address on Plum St. in Peabody where a 67-year-old man who was had been drinking and was lying on the floor the day before declined to be taken to a hospital. This time he was reported to be nauseated and in pain after a previous fall, with his breath reportedly smelling of blood.

The initial call went to Florence ambulance, which did not have two EMTs available. Marion ambulance was called instead. A Peabody police officer arrived before the ambulance and reported that the man was diabetic and had been lying in the same position since the night before.

Marion ambulance, which arrived 20 minutes after the latest call, took the man to Newton Medical.

4:25 p.m. — A man with facial swelling, a discolored lip, and slurred speech was taken from the 300 block of N. Ash St. to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:01 p.m. — A women who fell in the 100 S. Washington St. in Burns and suffered neck pains declined to be transported by Florence ambulance after it was summoned by a Burns first responder.

6:20 p.m. — A Parkside Homes resident who had not eaten or drank all day was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:39 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance.

SUNDAY

1:39 a.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Salina Regional Health Center by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:09 a.m. — An elderly man who was unresponsive and bleeding from the mouth at a Lois Lane residence at Marion County Park and Lake was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters were summoned to help lift the patient.

6:52 p.m. — A 51-year-old man possibly suffering a heart attack at a farmhouse on US-50 west of Mustang Rd. was taken to Newton Medical by Peabody ambulance.

Transmissions indicated possible confusion surrounding the call. The call initially went to Peabody ambulance. After Marion ambulance volunteered that it also would respond, dispatchers initially told Peabody ambulance to disregard the call. Three minutes later, they called back and told Peabody ambulance to continue.

Peabody ambulance arrived 11 minutes after the initial call. Marion ambulance arrived 6 minutes after that. The patient was transported 19 minutes later, with one Marion attendant accompanying him in Peabody ambulance and both ambulances heading to Newton Medical.

7:32 p.m. — An HCH patient with respiratory distress was transferred to Newton Medical by Hillsboro ambulance.

Immediately upon hearing this call, Marion and Peabody ambulances decided to rendezvous, return the Marion attendant to Marion ambulance, and send Marion ambulance back to Marion rather than continue on to Newton, outside the county.

MONDAY

10:27 a.m. — A Burns first responder was dispatched to a medical call in Butler County.

4:18 p.m. — A man who cut the tip of his thumb off in a door in the 300 block of Locust St. in Peabody was taken to St. Francis by Marion ambulance. Peabody ambulance, with just one EMT available, also answered the call as a first-response unit.

4:59 p.m. — A report of smoke coming from the east side of Peabody High School was quickly determined to be steam coming out a vent. Police, sheriff’s deputies, and firefighters and ambulances from both Peabody and Florence answered the call but were told to stand down after a maintenance worker verified that the emissions were normal.

8:47 p.m. — A lung cancer patient with difficulty breathing in the 100 block of E. 9th St. was taken to Newton Medical by Florence ambulance.
