DISPATCHES

The newspaper monitored these fire and ambulance calls this past week:

MAY 16

8:37 a.m. — What initially was reported as a minor two-vehicle accident at US-56 and Ash St. in Hillsboro drew a major response.

Hillsboro ambulance and Hillsboro firefighters were dispatched because, although no injuries were reported, air bags on one vehicle had deployed.

Hillsboro ambulance apparently did not respond, so two minutes later, Marion ambulance was dispatched instead. Marion EMTs initially requested that Tampa ambulance also be dispatched but a minute afterward canceled that call. However, a call was made for a LifeTeam helicopter ambulance in Hutchinson.

The helicopter was already en route when a Hillsboro firefighter arrived and recommended at 8:46 a.m. that it be canceled, noting: “This is a very minor, more or less fender-bender…. Everyone’s just standing around.”

The helicopter wasn’t canceled until five minutes later, when Marion ambulance arrived. Four minutes after that, the ambulance crew reported that accident victims had declined to be transported to a hospital.

Firefighters remained on the scene, apparently to help direct traffic, as only one sheriff’s deputy was available. Others were tending to a report of escaped cattle.

10:26 a.m. — An 82-year-old man who fell in the 100 block of Eisenhower Dr., hit his head, and was bleeding was taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion ambulance.

7:10 p.m. — After searching door-to-door in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence to locate a woman who put down her phone before providing a complete location, Florence ambulance transported the woman, who was having trouble breathing, to St. Luke.

10:24 p.m. — Because a paramedic, not just an EMT, was part of its crew, Hillsboro ambulance was called to transport a patient from St. Luke to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro 3½ hours later.

MAY 17

8:54 a.m. — A 28-year-old man complaining that he could not move his hands initially called for Hillsboro ambulance in the 500 block of S. Washington St. but called back three minutes later to say he would go to a hospital in a private vehicle.

The patient arrived at HCH at 5:08 a.m., and Marion ambulance was back in its quarters at 5:41 a.m., at the same time as Hillsboro ambulance returned to its quarters from the call to Goessel.
