Centre High School principal Donald Raymer informed the school board Monday about his plans to offer an east coast trip to students and community members.

He said the $2,400 trip would not be a school-sponsored event. Everyone who participated would be responsible to cover his or her own expenses and provide transportation to the airport.

Raymer said the trip likely would occur after school is out in spring. The group would use a private bus when they arrive at their destination.

“A private bus costs a little more, but we will have the freedom to choose where to go,” he said.

He said he has led other trips like this in the past.

“Students will learn more in a seven-day opportunity than in a whole year of school,” he said. “They learn about history in school, but they get the real deal when they go from place to place.”

He has taken people ranging in age from nine years old to grandparents. A parent accompanied those below junior high age. He said parent-child pairs have been popular.

The board gave his idea their blessing but requested that fundraisers for the trip be conducted outside of school events so as not to compete with school organizations’ fundraisers.

A minimum of 15 sign-ups are required but as many as 41 could go.

Board actions

• Renewal of property/casualty and fleet insurance for a premium of $60,828, an increase of $2,131 from the previous year.
• Approval of early graduation for senior Destiny Wangerin.
• Appointment of Mark Heiser as chief negotiator and Anita Svoboda and Jesse Brunner as 2019 negotiating committee.
• Acceptance of the resignation of business teacher Ashley Coirier, effective at the end of the semester.
