Dollar General theft probed

Staff writer

Peabody police are investigating theft at Dollar General and expect charges to be filed.

Officer Charles Walker declined to identify a suspect, say what had been stolen, or provide other details while the investigation continues.

“There’s an active theft, and I’m not going to point directions on who, what, when, where, why,” Walker said.

Evidence gathered so far would support a misdemeanor charge through municipal court, he said.

That could change to felony charges if additional evidence is provided, he said.

“I’m waiting to get some more evidence back so I can look through it and then go from there,” Walker said.

Walker has been working with the store’s district manager as part of the investigation.

He earlier said he had been looking into whether the store’s surveillance system had been shut down during the theft, but did not know whether that was possible.

“If there’s no proof of it from the camera system side, that it’s ever been shut down, then I can’t move forward with it,” Walker said.

Walker said that he hoped to receive additional information from Dollar General this week.

Dollar General had no further comment.
