Custodians use summer to do
a deep cleaning

Staff writer

A crew of nine people has been busy all summer giving Marion-Florence school facilities a deep cleaning.

They finished the high school and middle school several weeks ago and now are working at the elementary school.

Four people were working together in one classroom Monday.

Julie Shaft of Marion has been a custodian at the elementary school for 10 years. She misses the kids during the summer.

“I enjoy the kids a lot,” she said. “They’re the reason I keep coming back.”

Steven Smith has returned to the custodial staff after a nine-year absence. He lived in Hutchinson before returning to Marion a year ago.

“It brought me back to where my grandkids are,” he said.

He cleans the high school and middle school gymnasium and vocational agriculture shop. He also drives a bus.

“You get to know the kids well,” he said.

Two workers are not regular custodians but are spending the summer earning extra money.

Cheyenne Jeffrey is a paraprofessional with Marion County Special Education Cooperative, and Chrissy McFall is the middle school secretary.

“The extra money keeps the bills paid,” McFall said.

Crew members will be busy right up to a week before school starts, when they will return to their regular posts.
