County schools win $1,000 grants

Hillsboro and Marion students will receive new equipment for physical education classes, thanks to grants given to Marion Elementary School principal Justin Wasmuth and Hillsboro Middle and High School physical education teacher Jeff Haslett.
Wasmuth said the $1,000 grant from Healthy Habits for Life will be used for the school’s field day in spring, and a club called Running Wild, where students run a mile.
The decision to spend the grant on the two clubs was because it gets kids up and running.
“It also gives the option to buy some things that we may not get to normally buy,” Wasmuth said, “so it was a great grant to go for. I know I tried a couple times, and this was the first time I had actually gotten it.”
Haslett will use his $1,000 to purchase equipment to get kids more physically active.
The first piece of equipment he plans to buy is a cup stacking game called speed stack.
“They have to upstack and downstack the cups, so it’s a hand-eye coordination thing,” Haslett said. “They’re pretty fun. At the school I used to teach at we did that, so I thought the middle school kids would like that.”
Haslett is excited to receive the grant.
“I do have a budget, but it just seems like it goes pretty fast,” Haslett said, “so any time I get grant money, it’s fun to get new equipment. Kids always enjoy doing new activities.”
