Cougars loses to state-ranked Burlingame

Staff writer

Centre played Burlingame Friday at Bud Peterson Field and lost, 60-14. It was the Cougars’ third loss of the season.

The undefeated Bearcats are ranked third in the state in 1A, Division I, and have won all four of their contests by at least 46 points.

“What can I say,” coach Matt Warta said. “Burlingame is a very good team.”

The Bearcats scored three times in the first quarter, leaving the Cougars in the dust, 24-0.

Centre rebounded with a good second quarter, matching Burlingame’s 14 points with 14 of their own.

Xavier Espinoza had a 75-yard punt return early in the quarter, and Dylan Deines caught a pass from Cole Methvin for the conversion. Deines caught a 37-yard pass from Methvin for Centre’s last 6 points. The score at halftime was 38-14.

The remainder of the game belonged to Burlingame. The Bearcats added another 22 points before the game was called early in the fourth quarter.

Max Svoboda had 41 of Centre’s 57 rushing yards. Methvin threw 6 completed passes with receptions by Deines, Jensen Riffel, and Svoboda for 69 yards. Methvin threw 1 interception, and Deines was the leading tackler.

“We continue to make mental errors that we are addressing in practice,” Warta said. “I ask them to give me effort and pride, and they gave me that Friday night. They left it all out on the field. I promise we will fight through this. We won’t go out without a fight.”

The Cougars have a bye this week.
