Club hopes to win at blood drive

Collecting enough blood to win a scholarship for a graduating senior will be the goal of a Marion High School Key Club blood drive next week.
It will be sponsor Lori McLinden’s sixth blood drive, this time with a goal of collecting 81 units of blood.
“If we hit that, we get $250 from Red Cross that will go for a scholarship toward a graduating senior,” McLinden said. “That’s nice that the kids can financially gain with a scholarship.”
McLinden thinks people like donating blood because of how it makes them feel.
“I have heard there are some people that do it and they feel physically so much better because it kind of rejuvenates your body,” McLinden said. “So they make sure they donate several times a year because it makes them feel better.”
Key Club members will volunteer at three different stations throughout the day. They will work with refreshments, register donors at the door, or escort donors from the donation station to the refreshment area.
“It’s neat to be able to see the kids work together,” McLinden said.
Club members will provide homemade cookies and hamburger for walking tacos for the event.
Those who donate blood can track where their blood is used on an American Red Cross app on their phones.
“It’s neat, especially for kids, because they get to say, ‘Oh, I know where my blood was used,” McLinden said. “I think it helps them realize they made a difference in someone’s life.”
