City swears Jeffrey in as police chief

Marion assistant police chief Clinton Jeffrey will take over as chief of police effective immediately after Monday’s city council meeting.
Jeffrey comes to the position with 11 years’ experience in law enforcement. He comes to the role with support and affirmation of many Marion County law enforcement and judicial communities.
Jeffrey was sworn in Monday after a statewide search. An interview panel comprised of community members unanimously recommended his appointment, Mayor Todd Heitschmidt said.
The council approved an agreement with Russel and Jeanne Groves to purchase a 44.74 acre parcel of land for current safety issues and planned runway expansion in the future. The lot was purchased for $110,000.
A grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation will match 90 percent of the purchase and all legal fees.
The Groveses will pay the city $2,000 to have first refusal rights on developing a residential area west of the airport.
City administrator Roger Holter asked if state-imposed water fees from previous governor Sam Brownback’s 50-year water plan be printed on individual statements for residents to see what portion of their bill goes to the city and to the state. The council approved the addition which will take affect with January bills, Holter said.
