City council makes quick work of business

Marion City Council held one of its shortest meetings on record Nov. 19 when they adjourned after 32 minutes that included an executive session to discuss purchasing real estate.
After the executive session, council members voted to give the go-ahead to city employees to present a counter-offer on the proposed purchase of 45 acres of land north of the airport runway. The owner, Russell Groves of Hillsboro, wants $110,000 for land where the city wants to extend the municipal airport runway.
Extending the airport runway has been discussed for a year and a half. The proposed expansion will bring the airport into compliance with Federal Aviation Administration recommendations.
In May, Kansas Department of Transportation awarded $122,400 to purchase land and extend the runway.
Groves plans to use the remaining land he owns to develop hangar homes. Hangar homes are homes with attached airplane hangars.
Council members also got their first look at a squad car newly acquired by the police department.
