According to 2016-17 enrollment figures provided by Kansas State High School Activities Association, Centre High School has 70 students.
Except for Elyria Christian School at McPherson, which has 54 students, Centre’s enrollment is the lowest among Wheat State League schools.
Herington, with 123 students is the largest, followed by Solomon, with 107, and Canton-Galva, with 98. All are classified 2A, which requires an enrollment of 92-156 students. Among 1A members (23-91 students), Goessel, Peabody-Burns, and Little River have 88 students. Hope and White City have a combined enrollment of 79 as Rural Vista. Wakefield has 74 students.
Herington and Canton-Galva joined WSL this year.
Centre athletic director Greg Wyatt said enrollment numbers change every year, so classifications can change, as well.
“Centre has always been in a league with a combination of 1A and 2A schools based upon the proximity and the fact we all play 8-man football,” he said.
“About four years ago, we were only two students from becoming 2A ourselves because at that time we had 96 students, and the cutoff was 98. When we were in the Cottonwood Valley League, we were a 2A school playing against 3A and 4A.”
