Centre girls defeat Little River in overtime

A game the Lady Cougars played Friday at Little River was close throughout, but the girls pulled out an overtime victory, 44-42.

The game was tied, 19-19, at halftime, and Centre trailed by 1 after three quarters.

Emily Schlesener’s basket returned the lead to the Lady Cougars, and Kate Basore made two consecutive baskets. Centre led by 5 points.

However, Little River came back to take a 1-point lead with 35 seconds remaining.

Ally Basore was fouled and made a free throw to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Little River opened the period with a score, but a 3-pointer by Pankratz returned the lead to Centre. Ally and Kate Basore combined for three consecutive free throws. Little River answered with 3 points but trailed by 1 with 17 seconds remaining.

Shelby Pankratz was fouled and made a free throw to put the icing on the cake.

Pankratz scored 14 points, followed by Schlesener with 12.

The Centre boys suffered a different fate. They couldn’t get their offense going and lost, 49-35.
