Centre Cougars set to host regionals

Football team beats Altoona-Midwawy 56-0

Centre will host a regional this week after defeating Altoona-Midway, 56-0, on Friday in the first round of the playoffs. The 7-2 Cougars will play 6-3 Colony Crest at 7 p.m.

Friday’s victory was the sixth blowout in as many weeks.

Jensen Riffel again led the Cougars with six carries for 121 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He had two receptions for 40 yards, including a touchdown.

Braxton Smith had three carries for 43 yards and one rushing touchdown. He caught four of five passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Luke Hudson had two receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown, and ran 33 yards for a touchdown.

Aidan Svoboda had two carries for 14 yards.

Lane Methvin led the defense with three solo tackles and seven assists.

Smith had three solo tackles and four assists. He also had a fumble recovery.

Svoboda had two solo tackles, Elias Jirak had five assisted tackles, and Quentin Bina had one solo and one assist.

Coach Kelly Steiner was happy with the team’s passing game.

“We threw the ball well and had some touchdown catches, which was good because we really haven’t had to throw the ball much lately.”

He is priming his team for a challenge on Friday.

“By the time you get to the regional round of football, every team that is still playing is good,” he said, “and we will have to be ready and will need to play at a high level.”
