Basore goes to national scout conference

Kate Basore has been a member of Girl Scouts since kindergarten. She enjoys spending time with friends and making connections for the future.
As a highlight of her Girl Scouts career, the Centre senior was selected to attend the National Girl Scouts conference Oct. 4-8 in Columbus, Ohio.
Chelsea Clinton and Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas were conference speakers. They spoke about how Girl Scouts contributes to women’s empowerment.
“They were really fun to listen to and really made me want to go out and make a change in the world,” Kate said.
As a voting delegate representing the Kansas Heartland Girl Scout Council, Kate was up early every morning to work on changes to the Girl Scout constitution and bylaws.
“It was loads of information and very fulfilling to learn how a global organization like Girl Scouts really works,” Kate said.
She has earned the highest award possible for Cadette Girl Scouts (seventh and eighth-graders), the Silver Award. After completing an extensive application process, she completed 75 hours of work on a team project that focused on childhood nutrition. The team also put together a “color run,” in which runners wore white clothes and ran through colored powder.
“I am involved in Girl Scouts because it creates really good opportunities to grow as a person and earn college scholarships,” Kate said. “I’ve had a lot of fun, and I want to encourage every girl, whether you are in first or 11th grade, to participate in it,” she said.
