Albert Loewen

Services for Albert F. Loewen, 99, who died Nov. 19 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, were to have been Monday at Koerner Heights Church, Newton, with burial in Springfield Cemetery, rural Hillsboro.

Born Nov. 2, 1925, to Abraham S. and Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Fast) Loewen, he grew up on a farm between Goessel and Lehigh, he was baptized in 1944, and graduated from Goessel High School in 1948, his schooling interrupted by three years of farm work during World War II.

He worked as a dairy tester and a custom cutter and, in alternative service during the Korean War, in the kitchen of a Denver hospital.

He studied accounting at the University of Denver and returned to Kansas as a bookkeeper at Crossroads Co-op in Goessel, working there for more than 30 years.

He married Martha Thiessen on June 28, 1957, at Zoar Krimmer Mennonite Brethren Church near Inman. They resided in Goessel until moving to North Newton.

After his job with the co-op ended, he painted, did bookkeeping, worked in the mail room at Bethel College, and had a motor delivery route for the Newton Kansan in addition to singing in Kansas Mennonite Men’s Chorus.

His wife died Nov. 1. Also preceding him in death were brothers Bernhard “Ben”, David, Peter, and infant Aaron; sisters Martha and Hulda; an unborn child; and several unborn grandchildren.

Survivors include daughter Lois Snyder, sons James and Duane, 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with Mission Aviation Fellowship in care of Jost Funeral Home, Hillsboro.
