The old gate and entranceway to the cemetery were torn away Wednesday to make way for a new entranceway. The new work will be of cut stone and will provide an “island” with a plaque to divide the roadway into an entrance and an exit. Pestinger Construction of Hillsboro is doing the work.

Marion grade schools will be dismissed at noon today and tomorrow because of the heat. Unseasonable temperatures, ranging into the high 90s, have made afternoon classes difficult and uncomfortable.

The Kansas state champion Tampa softball team went to St. Louis last weekend for a western regional tournament. Team members gave a good account of themselves in spite of dropping their two games by close 1-0 and 3-1 scores.

Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Widler invited relatives for birthday cake and ice cream Tuesday evening honoring little daughter Jeannie Faye’s 1st birthday.

Marion’s FFA chapter finished first place and won $100 at a farm mechanics exhibit at the Kansas Free Fair, Topeka. The Marion exhibit included a power hoist by Dwight Kruse, pipe stock rack by Frank Leutschaft, a truck and truck bed by Darrel Riffel, a gate made by Larry Olsen, and a loading chute by Jon Thole.

Lou Richter, head of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and former Marion County sheriff, died Thursday in Topeka after a long illness.
