Important features of every Old Settlers parade are many bands sprinkled throughout the length of the parade. This year nearly 700 musicians took part in the more than a dozen bands.

Pictured on the front page is the famous Rube Band, with members catching their breaths after a rendition of “Show Boy.” Members this year were Fred Allen, 92-year-old Nodie Baker, Lucille Britain, Rosse Case, Tom Good, Bud Hannaford, Sue Harris, Bob Hoch, Bill Meyer, Bud Pierce, Jean Pierce, Wilbur Rindt, Bob Reinke, and Betty Tipton.

In a move designed to combat spread of Dutch elm disease into this area, city commissioners this week agreed to remove and destroy any tree with the disease on the parking of any property in the city.

Irvin Teetzen of Tampa missed $200 at Wednesday’s Marion Cash Days drawing. Fred Mehlinger received $20; Georgia Moore, Marion, missed $5; Mrs. Don Biesterfeld, Tampa, missed $5; and Mrs. Loren Kelsey, Marion, missed $35.

Marion area auctioneers Bill and Carl Schnell and Lee Remy rode an interesting entry in the Old Settlers parade — a genuine old-time spring wagon pulled by a black mule.

Beginning Oct. 10, letter carriers throughout the Marion area will deliver special cards to every residence. Each card will have spaces for addresses for which the residents wish to have ZIP codes. Only the street address and city and state are required. The post office will add the appropriate ZIP codes and return the cards to the mailer.
