The first countywide spelling bee in quite a few years was held Friday morning in the county courtroom. Winner of the bee was Anabel Unruh, eighth grader from District 127 (Grand Central). In second place was Marilyn Bartel a seventh grader at District 129 (Brudertal). Third place went to Ora Hett, seventh grader from District 41 (Morning Star).

Michael Gene Klose, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Klose, was born April 5 at St. Luke Hospital. Born at the hospital on April 8 was Rose Marie Bina, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bina.

The annual seventh and eighth grade banquet will be held Friday evening in the cafeteria room at the Hill grade school. James Robert Meisner will act as master of ceremonies for the evening. Tim Williams will give the welcome address, which will be responded to by Eileen Pavey, eighth grader.

Ada Piland celebrated her 13th birthday Monday by inviting friends for a hi-fi party. Guests included Dick Morse, Jan Hayen, John Morse, Ronald Druse, Gerry Roberts, Carol Kline, Faith Kelsey, Deanna Kimball, Deanna Klenda, Donna Newsom, Connie Fisher, Sandra Jackson, and Karen Schroeder.

Marion city schools will hold their annual “Open House” April 16 and 17 at the gymnasium. There will be a band concert by the grade school students, art demonstrations, and displays by all school departments.
