The old gate and entranceway to the cemetery were torn away Wednesday to make way for a new entranceway. The new work will be of cut stone and will provide an “island” with plaque to divide the roadway into an entrance and an exit. Pestinger Construction Co. of Hillsboro is doing the work.

Marion grade schools will be dismissed at noon today and tomorrow because of the heat. The unseasonable high temperatures, ranging into the high 90s, have made afternoon classes difficult and very uncomfortable.

Kansas State Champions, the Tampa softball team, went to St. Louis last weekend to take part in a western regional tournament. They gave a good account of themselves in spite of dropping their two games by close 1-0 and 3-1 scores.

Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Widler asked relatives for birthday cake and ice cream Tuesday evening honoring their little daughter Jeannie Faye’s first birthday.

Marion FFA chapter won first place and $100 at the Farm Mechanics exhibit at the Kansas Free Fair, Topeka. The Marion exhibit included a power hoist by Dwight Kruse, pipe stock rack by Frank Leutschaft, truck and truck bed by Darrel Riffel, gate made by Larry Olsen, and a loading chute by Jon Thole.

Lou Richter, head of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and former Marion County Sheriff, died in Topeka Thursday after a long and critical illness.
