Rain fell for the first time on this day-of-days since Old Settlers’ Day was initiated in 1912. The Community Guild set up their food stand in the basement of the city building and a concert was provided by the Army band from Fort Riley. The parade was delayed to 2 p.m. when there were only a few wet drops falling through the moist air. The afternoon program, with Ed Wheeler as speaker, began at 4 p.m. at the city building followed by an evening of musical entertainment.

Police Chief Lyle Sanders is shown as he receives a special 10-year service award from Marion Mayor Lynn Christensen. The presentation was made Monday evening at the regular weekly meeting of the Marion City Commission.

Ezra Helmer, who has many years experience in the automotive body shop business, has opened his own establishment, Marion Body Shop, this week at 112 N. First Street.

Two Marion High School band members, Mike Steinel and Jan Herrick, have been accepted to participate in the Wichita Youth Symphony.

Mrs. Roger (Mary Ann) Kohls of Lincolnville announces the opening of a “School of Dance” for all in the Marion community. Mrs. Kohls is an experienced performer. She has had 13 years training and is presently enrolled in the Wichita School of Fine Arts.
