Sniffing out problems, a specialty for Sheriff June Jost, will be much simpler with a new arson sniffer device at the county’s disposal. The machine detects the presence of combustible chemicals in ashes for arson investigations.

The sniffer device was presented by Kansas Farm Bureau Insurance representatives Wayne Colle and Mike Mueller, who are pictured with Sheriff Jost as he examines the machine.

It looks like it’ll be a rough and dusty road ahead for a long, long time in the five-block area of Hudson, Freeborn, and Roosevelt streets where 27 residents petitioned for improvements, then 23 backed down.

The City of Marion did not force the issue, but ended up swallowing a bill for nearly $10,000 worth of useless plans.

Brad Heerey has been hired as a staff accountant by Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., of Wichita. He will graduate from Emporia State University in May with a BSB degree. Brad is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heerey Jr., Marion.

The Don Kyle Combo of Emporia will provide music for the annual Valentine’s Dance at Marion County Club. The $5-per-person price includes breakfast, to be served following the dance.

Final action on the proposed cancellation of three Continental Trailways bus routes, including service through Marion and Herington, will not be taken until at least after March 1, according to Vernon Wenger, supervisor for the Kansas Corporation Commission.

About 25 patrons and students of the Centre School District presented board members with a petition Monday night calling for the dismissal of Centre High School Principal Glenn Cunningham. No action was taken by the board.
