The days of the old West came to life in Marion Saturday as townspeople and visitors took in the activities of “Western Days.” Horses, cowboy hats, Indians, a western shoot-out on Main Street, and a jackpot rodeo added action to the hot, but eventful, day. Stephanie Loney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Loney of Marion, was chosen as Rodeo Queen following the weeklong promotion of the event by the Marion Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. and Mrs. Royal Smith announce the engagement of their daughter Joella Kay, to Gary Duane Hett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hett. The couple has selected Oct. 3 as their wedding date.

Jami Shirley and Mr. and Mrs. Max Hayen treated Van’s 10- to 12-year-old baseball team and Shelter Insurance’s 12-to 15-year-old team to homemade ice cream and cake in East Park July 14. Jami was the girls’ coach this summer.

Write-ups of wedding anniversary celebrations in this weeks’ newspaper include those of Mr. and Mrs. David W. Wheeler, 50 years; Mr. and Mrs. Max Loveless, 38; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Batt, 40; and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Wolf, 50th.

Mrs. J.S. Penner, Ebenfeld correspondent — “Farmers have been very busy for some time. Combining is done, planting of row crops is done, but there is plenty of work left, such as putting up hay and plowing. Rain is badly needed for everything, especially for the row crops that were planted later.”
