For the first time in several years, the Marion County Ambulance Department completed the fiscal year within its budget. The department finished the year with just over $1,000 left in the account. The feat was surprising to county commissioners who had anticipated further subsidizing the department as much as $5,000 by the end of the year.
Kenneth Schmidt, Marion, is pictured as he receives the Donahue Corporation Award from Tom Donahue for driving one million miles without a major accident. Since beginning with the firm in 1973, Schmidt has driven 1,013,763 miles, the equivalent of four round-the-world-trips.
Jami Shirley now holds the school record as basketball’s highest career scorer. Shirley toppled the record of 1,026 set by Greg Boyle last year. She passed him Thursday night by scoring 18 points again Cheney, bringing her total to 1,044.
Kevin Marler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Marler, celebrated his sixth birthday Saturday with school friends. Those invited were Todd Winter, Matt Holub, Danielle Longhofer, Allison Ford, and Laura Walz.
Marion High School seniors selected to the 1982 session of American Legion Girls’ State in June are Cindy Heerey, Lisa Richmond, and Stephanie Loney, Marion representatives, and Linda Robinson, Florence, who will represent the Tampa auxiliary with funding coming from the Florence auxiliary.
