Arthur Lewerenz, 48, of Topeka, former Marion businessman and native of Lincolnville was charged Monday by Shawnee County authorities with defrauding the State of Kansas Welfare Department of $14,187.13.

Jeannette Bentz reigned as queen Friday night at homecoming festivities at Centre High School. Runners-up were Kelly Jirak, Amy Miller, and Mary Vinduska.

Ron Cork, administrator of St. Luke Hospital for the past three years, has received career advancement. Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society has named him administrator of the 98-bed Logan County Hospital at Sterling, Colorado.

Jami Shirley went over the 1,000-point mark in her high school career Thursday night with a 17-point effort against Berean Academy.

Kenneth Jost, Hillsboro, Clarence, Anna, and Dean Bartel, Durham, Gene Nelson, Burdick, and David Thiessen, Peabody, were announced as Banker Award winners at the annual Conservation District banquet Monday night.

Greg Tice was selected winner among sixth graders at the small-scale spelling bee held Monday at Florence Elementary School. Lucy Guerra won the seventh grade competition, and Chantel Nienstedt was selected top speller among eighth graders. The winners will represent the middle school March 22 at the county spelling bee in Marion.
