Capt. David R. Montgomery, USN, son of Dave Montgomery of Marion, is pictured receiving the Meritorious Service Medal recognizing his command of the USS George Washington Carver nuclear submarine during “six complex and demanding operations of great importance to the United States from May 1978 to August 1981.”

More than 30 people ventured onto the ice at Marion Lake Saturday for a time of ice fishing. Pictured on the frosty surface are Arnold Curtis of Newton and Leonard Klenda, Lincolnville. Further downstream, Richard Ball of Hillsboro reported catching over 15 crappie.

Marion Lady Warriors advanced to the second round of competition at the Berean Invitational Tournament by defeating Goessel Monday night, 31-23. Jami Shirley ended the game with 19 points. Trudy Ratzloff was second leading scorer with nine points.

Dr. Joseph Galichia of Wichita, widely known heart specialist, will be the speaker Monday at a meeting of women’s clubs in the conference room at St. Luke Medical Clinic.

Bill Rogers of Marion and Perry Klassen of Lehigh, won the “big coon contest” of Kansas Fur Co. of Tampa and a $150 cash award with entries of two raccoons, one weighing 30 pounds, the other 27. The coons were captured Dec. 19 with the aid of their plott hounds Rowdy and Hoss.
