This week, the popular profile of someone “who made a difference” to the town, features Ben Meier, who came to Marion in the 1920s after an offer of a farm job paying $50 per month, plus room and board. He later became a restaurant owner until being washed out in the 1951 flood, served as mayor for three years, worked for Riddle Soil Service, Beech Aircraft, Boeing, and finally, as a bus driver for the Marion school system.

A party is planned March 17 at the home of Marian Crofoot to recognize the birthday of Carla Stovall, Marion native who is a Republican candidate for nomination as Kansas Attorney General. It is a “come and go” party from 5 to 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

For the sixth year in a row the Florence Middle School band earned a I rating at the CVJL instrumental festival and clinic. Soloists, all receiving Is, were Nick Kraus, baritone; Cy Prior, tuba; Chad Buchholz, saxophone; and Andy Albrecht and Jerod Hett, trumpet.

M/Sgt Terri Lehman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Robinson of Florence, continues to earn honors and recognition for professional performance in the Air Force. In December, she was named NCO of the Quarter for her squadron. Later she received the award as Senior NCO of the Year for 1993.
