Plans have been made for Marion to host 341 riders of the Biking Across Kansas group expected to arrive at Central Park on June 9. Marion Chamber of Commerce will have a welcoming committee on hand to greet riders, offering them a cold drink and information about the community. A spaghetti dinner will be served to them in the basement of Marion City Building.

The Rev. Michael Pope, pastor of Valley United Methodist Church, addressed the 300 people gathered in Marion Cemetery for Memorial Day services. Pope said the youth of today will continue to show the courage of their forebears honored on Memorial Day.

“Marion County — In the Center of It All” is the name of the tourism tabloid now available. It was produced by Marion County Economic Development Council. Anyone wishing to pick up a copy should contact the local chamber of commerce or city office.

Marion High School graduate Charlie Helmer is pictured playing taps at the Memorial Day service. Instructor Mike Connell was lead performer, with Helmer, Brian Loomis, and Michel Soyez providing echoes.

“Beary Special Babies” born at St. Luke Hospital in May include Brandon James Meierhoff, May 4; Leslie Olin Riggs, May 6; Mary Alice Britton, May 11; Jeremy Layne Moore, May 19; and Amanda Diane Floyd, May 28.
