Twelve students from Berlin-Tempelhof, Germany, attended the Marion City Commission meeting Monday in a gesture of friendship and good will between the communities. This year’s trip is the eighth annual Easter-vacation visit by students from Germany to Marion.

Faye Makovec of Marion was recommended to become Marion County Register of Deeds Friday when Marion County Republican precinct committeemen and women met. Current Register of Deeds Dorothy Lawrence will retire May 1.

Marion High School senior Jason Summerville won the Class 3-2-1A state weightlifting championship in the 181-pound class Saturday. He lifted 1,105 pounds on three lifts.

First prize in the junior high essay contest sponsored by the Florence Women’s’ Christian Temperance Union went to Rachel Janzen, second to Kelley Hett, and third to Jenny Groening. The first place essay has been entered in the state contest.

Marion Kiwanis Club members collected 33 sacks of trash Saturday during their adopt-a-highway trash pickup.

Sam Peterson took four gold medals at the Wichita State University meet Friday and Saturday. He won the 800-meter run, the pole vault, and was a member of the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. John Wheeler was first in the shot put with 58.0 and set a meet record for Class 2A with a discus hurl of 161 feet, 11.75 inches.
