Regular appointments were pushed aside Monday at the Marion County Commission meeting in an effort to assign various additional duties to department heads following the unexpected death of Charles Penner on Saturday. Penner was emergency preparedness coordinator, public health sanitarian, and planning commission secretary.

A good crowd was on hand at 8 a.m. Thursday for the “grand re-opening” of Duckwall’s which has been renovated for structural strength and includes a greatly expanded inventory of merchandise.

Garrett Varenhorst, sophomore at Marion High School, has won a local writing contest sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council comparing and contrasting traits of Columbus with a public figure of today. His winning essay, comparing Columbus with Neil Armstrong, has been forwarded for regional competition.

Marion residents Marie Morse, Norma Hannaford, Mary Costello, and Jean and Alex Case were among those who toured the Morgan House at Peabody during the Marion County Historical Society meeting March 6.

Melissa Ramsey, Shane Klein, and Angie Bina have been named to the Cottonwood Valley League all-league basketball team. All three students are seniors at Marion High School.
