Construction started about two weeks ago at Marion Elementary School for a 10-room annex. The annex will place all kindergarten through sixth-grade classes in the district at that location. The project should be completed in time for the 1992-93 school year.

In the bowling world, Nathan Smith of Marion neared the pinnacle Jan. 28. Smith bowled a 288 — 12 short of a perfect game — with 10 strikes in a row. He also bowled a strike in the 10th frame, but got an eight-count in the bonus 11th frame. Estimated to be the second highest score in MarBowl Lanes history, (Gene Winkler bowled a 290 several years ago), Smith ended the evening to applause from the crowd.

Marion High School girls’ basketball team won the Berean Academy tournament this week. Leading scorer was Iris Shanklin with 18 points, followed by Angie Bina with 11. Other scorers were Melissa Ramsey, Katrina Hancock, Amanda Janzen, Kristi Kraus, and Traci Darrow.

“Beary Special Babies” born at St. Luke Hospital during January were Andrew Aaron Bennett, born Jan. 2, Christopher Michael Rodriguez, Jan. 21; and Victoria Ashley Bucker, Jan. 23.

Candidates for Centre High School winter homecoming queen and king include Jennifer Makovec, Amy Erickson, Lorell Hanson, Jan Smith, Corey Kepler, David Rudolph, Matt Jenkins, and Ryan Spohn.
