Consumers have helped cushion Marion from the blows of a gloomy recession this Christmas. Most Marion retail business owners said business has been surprisingly good so far and for different reasons.

Bill Gahan, Kansas manager for Martin Marietta Aggregates with offices in Topeka, said the new “North Marion” quarry is a “new facility that has never been worked.” The land belongs to Rocky Hett and his mother, Geraldine Williams. Martin Marietta has leased the land for stone production.

Students receiving top prizes in the Marion Elementary School Jump Rope for Heart fund-raiser are Amanda McLinden, Lisa Buchholz, Heather Matz, and Angie Moore. Students raised more than $1,000 in pledges for the American Heart Association.

Dear Santa, How are you and your reindeer doing? I have tried to be good this year, but sometime it’s kind of hard. For Christmas I would like a Turtles Technidrome, pirate ship set of Legos, Home Alone game, a Fievel Goes West game, a Robin Hood cartoon. We will leave you milk and cookies on Christmas Eve. Nick Carlson, Age 5.
