Marion will celebrate Independence Day with an old-fashioned patriotic celebration in Central Park, as requested by President George Bush, to be followed by a fireworks display at Marion Manor. The park program will be one which welcomes home veterans of Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf.

Families reporting reunions over the past weekend included the Smith family, meeting at Marion County Lake recreation hall; the Hanschu family, Central Park; and the Thye family, Red Coach Inn, McPherson.

Torie and Katie Hett are pictured sitting beside the Indian metate their father, Dave Hett, found near their home south of Marion. This particular style of grinding slab is one of only two that have been found in Kansas, State archaeologist Thomas A. Witty said. Witty spent three days on the Hetts’ land, examining and documenting storage pits filled with Indian artifacts.

The Alferd Packer Memorial String Band will perform July 13 on Central Park Stage.

Marion High School student Jenny Herzet recently visited Washington, D.C., to attend the Future Farmers of America national leadership conference. She got a close-up look at life in the nation’s capital and visited the Capitol itself in company with Congressman Dick Nichols, who represents the Fifth District of Kansas.
