Dozens turned out for the combined Marion City Building rededication and Marion High School pops concert May 14. Special guests included former mayors Ben Meier, Ira Newcomer, Lynn Christensen, Peggy Blackman, and Martin Tice.

Four generations of Marion High School graduates, all in the same family, posed for a special picture during this year’s graduation season. They are Lucy Pierce Kline, class of 1913; her daughter, Doris Kline Ewert, who graduated in 1938; granddaughter Donna Ewert Hajek, class of 1970, and great-granddaughter Kelli Hajek who is a member of this year’s graduating class.

The law firm of Karstetter and Klenda this week announced the Susan C. Hoffman has joined the practice as an associate.

During graduation ceremonies Sunday, Julie Sellers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sellers of rural Florence, was named valedictorian. She and Glenn Krispense were named “outstanding seniors.” Stephanie Burkholder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Burkholder, was named salutatorian.

The National Park System is considering pursuing the purchase of the Z-Bar Ranch in Chase County with plans to turn it into a national monument.

Graduating Marion High School seniors purchased a flowering pear tree in honor of longtime history and government instructor Pat Jackson. Planted by maintenance men in front of the brick school building, the tree will stand in recognition of Jackson’s many years of service.
